Pathfinder Mountaineering Trip Reports -
Ten Days in Rjukan - Day 4 (30th January 2006)

Editor: Chris McDaid

Everyone climbing today. Jim & Erick headed to lower gorge, starting on Hjemreisen.

Erick - "Hookfest on Hjemreisen, then a link up with Kaminfossen, an easy WI4 in a gully. The crux was the bushwhacking higher on the route. Very entertaining"

Davie, Trevor & Paul headed for Tjonnstadbergfossen, climbed the previous day by Jim & Erick.

Tjonnstadbergfossen

Davie - "Using insider information from Jim & Erick, we located the easy way up to the foot of this great route. We found the zigzag path uphill and danced round the dogshit for about 25 mins to the route. NB this was the longest walk in I had during 8 days of solid climbing!! The route itself is a cracker, low end WI4 for 3 good pitches, with a couple of steep bits to maintain interest, then a scottish type gully final pitch. Superb".

Ian & Stuart headed for the upper gorge, intent on Sabortofossen WI5.

Ian - "Sabortofossen justified the hype, with an intricate 2nd pitch and finished with heavily featured steep ice for 40m, abseiled down in time for lunch. Our afternoon consisted of an express ascent of Bakveien WI4, then exiting the gorge via Lettvan WI3".

Chris, Tom & Dougie returned to Vemork. Chris - "We opted to gain the gorge by abseiling down Host WI4. Being a complete diddy, I'd forgotten my helmet!! We decided to split Host into 2 pitches, with Tom taking the first pitch".

Tom on Host

"This passed without incident and he set up a belay on the halfway ledge. Dougie then had a go at seconding but baled out after about 6m. Good effort though. I seconded the pitch (borrowing Dougie's helmet) and soon joined Tom at the belay. I led the final pitch which was short & sharp, although a little disappointing overall. We abseiled back down and headed round to the upper gorge where Tom decided to take Dougie up Traceys Eyes WI3. While this was going on, I was filming, and also managed to catch up with 2 of our Yorkshire compatriots, Andy & Daz, who set off up Nedre Swingfoss WI3".

Over to Dougie -

" This route looked a reasonably easy angled WI3 which I could attempt. As I belayed Tom I realised this was going to be a longer route than I expected. When I was about halfway up, I was tiring badly, but managed to struggle on up to Tom, who was belayed on 2 in situ Abalakovs".

"Tom's preference was to climb up a steep section to exit the icefall but I just wanted to go down. Tom confidently rearranged the ropes and after a few nervous moments, we regained the gorge. Thanks Tom".

Dougie opted to walk out of the gorge & Tom & Chris opted to climb out via Nedre Swingfoss WI3, possibly the wettest route in the area!!! On topping out, the rest of the mob were found ice bouldering at the hairpin route, Swingfoss WI4, eerily illuminated by the Transit minibus headlights!!!
