Editor: Chris McDaid

Tom, Ian, Erick & Jim went skiing. Chris & Trevor headed back to Vemork with the intention of climbing Vemorkbrufoss Ost WI4 70m & Bakveien WI4 140m.

Vemorkbrufoss Ost:

Chris - "Trevor led the first 25m pitch up a short steep pillar to a large spacious snow bay"

Trevor on Vemorkbrufoss Ost

"The second pitch started with a steep 20m pillar which reared up to almost vertical in the last 5m. I found the climbing straightforward, although very tiring placing ice screws on the upper steep section, very strenuous. The rest of the route passed without incident and we abseiled back down the route and made our way round to Bakveien in the upper gorge. Trevor led the first pitch up to a spectacular ice filled mini amphitheatre, a superb spot. I started up the 2nd pitch which was reasonable, although the most enjoyable pitch I'd climbed so far, a 2m wide chimney choked with ice, so different from most of the other routes around here"

Chris on Bakveien

"Trevor climbed the last pitch, up steadily disintegrating ice, to top out at the Vemork museum, from where a leisurely stroll took us round to the car park".

Davie and Stuart had earlier headed to the upper gorge.

Davie - "Stuart spotted Blindtarmen WI4 which looked very steep on the main pitch. In a fit of bravery I volunteered to lead it. The first 10m was vertical and I was pleased that I got up it without any falls or submissions, but I'm sure Stuart didn't like removing the plethora of ice screws I placed!! We then descended and headed over to Trappfoss"

Stuart - "Trappfoss is an enjoyable exposed ice climb with a sustained central pitch of 55m, good value WI4"

The troops all then gathered at the carpark only to discover the minibus wouldn't start!! Trevor and Chris managed to cadge a lift into town from some Danes to buy jumpleads and after numerous attempts at jump starting, defeat was admitted. After a few frantic phone calls to Rent-A-Wreck via Tom, a breakdown truck duly appeared and got the minibus mobile by towing it. Almost as soon as we got going, Davie managed to stall it!! The procedure was repeated and all were soon back at the chalet with the promise of a replacement vehicle in the morning.
